Biographical Statement

Miss Mary Jean Leckemby was born June 22, 1918 in Monongahela, PA the only child of James B. and Gail P. (Camp) Leckemby. She attended Vineland High School in Vineland, NJ and graduated from Wheaton College in 1941 with a B.A. in English and minors in Latin and Education. During this time she volunteered with Rural Bible Crusade, was a member of the Aelioian Literary Society and assistant secretary to Chi Sigma Theta, in addition to singing in the chapel choir. She was Recorder in the Registrar's Office from 1941 until her untimely death on August 6, 1948 in an auto accident at Seminary Avenue and Scott Street in Wheaton. She was 30 years old. In an article in the Wheaton Record, President Edman remembered Jean as "known and beloved by all who knew her for her quiet efficiency, cheerfulness, courtesy, and dependability."

Scope and Contents

The Jean Leckemby scrapbooks number four volumes, spanning her years at Wheaton during 1937, '38, '39 and '40. Each volume contains programs of campus events, literary societies, rulebooks, holiday cards, correspondence and newspaper clippings. The books measure 10 1/2 x 14.
