Biographical Statement
Ruth Frances Nutting - Ruth was born July 16, 1860 in Vermont to Sarah and Rufus Nutting. She began taking drawing courses at a young age through Wheaton College. She also studied in Munich and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1890s. Bowker's 1900 American Art Directory (vol. 3) states that she was a pupil of Georgios Jakobides in Munich (p. 51). The Nutting Genealogy says she was a portrait artist who studied and taught art and English to the family of the Regent of Bavaria. While so employed she met many of the royal personages of Europe including the king and queen of Portugal, the ex-emperor Don Pedro, and the emperor and empress of Austria, the latter being afterward assassinated. Upon returning to the United States she operated a studio in Wheaton, Illinois and in Chicago during the winter. In 1897 she lived at 420 Seminary Avenue in Wheaton.
