Biographical Statement

Dr. Marian Jane Downey was born September 13, 1887 in Belfast, Ireland. Her undergraduate work was done at Wheaton College (IL) where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, June 1923. In February 1930 she received the degree Master of Arts in English from the University of Illinois and later in 1937 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of Illinois on "Studies in Charlotte Bronte." She was Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor of English at Wheaton College from 1926-1950.
