Biographical Statement

Rev. Frederick Edwin Johnson was born June 8, 1887 in New Milford, IL to John P. and M.C. (Arpin) Johnson (both born in Sweden). He attended Northland College Academy in Asland, WI for one semester in 1915, Wheaton Academy and received a diploma from Moody Bible Institute in 1915 and served his country in France during WWI. He graduated from Wheaton College in absentia in 1921 (as of the Class of 1919) with a B.A. degree. He also took additional courses at DePaul University (Spring 1920), the University of Chicago (Spring/Summer 1920) and received a B.Div from McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago) in 1921 He was ordained April 26, 1921 by the Presbytery of Chicago at the Buena Memorial Presbyterian Church. In 1921 the Board of Foreign Missions, PCUSA, commissioned Rev. Johnson to life service as a missionary to Brazil. He and his wife, Lillian Miller Johnson (d. 11/11/1965), served in Brazil for 37 years where their three daughters were born. The PCUSA Board granted him the status of honorably retired in 1957. Following retirement, the Presbytery of Chicago installed him as a supply pastor and missionary speaker which took him around the country. He also became one of the founders of the Wheaton Senior Citizens Club and served as chaplain for 10 years. He served on the committee to establish Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield, IL) where he died. He wrote three books after he passed the age of 80 which were used by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, for which he was an active member and served as treasurer for many years. He was active in the Wheaton Bible Church, Pacific Garden Mission, Wheaton Convalescent Home and other Christian ministries. He died on May 17, 1978 in Wheaton, IL and was survived by two daughters and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter. He was 90.
