Biographical Statement

Dr. G. Henry Waterman was born in Verona, NY on January 26, 1915. His education includes an A.B. from Houghton College (1944); M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School (1948) and the B.D. (1953); and additional studies at Nyack, University of Chicago, the University of Oklahoma (summer 1951), Columbia University (1952-53). He received his Ph.D. at New York University. Dr. Waterman has held pastorates in New York State, was a missionary under appointment to China by the Christian & Missionary Alliance (C&MA) (1940-42); was instructor in Greek at Wheaton College (1948-51); and has worked with the American Bible Society as Associate Secretary of Translations and as translation consultant in the Philippines beginning (1951-54); functioned as a translation consultant for the Philippine Bible House (1954-65); was a visiting instructor of Greek at Union Theological Seminary and Ebenezer Bible College (summer); Wheaton College Graduate School Associate Professor of Bible and Theology (1965-70); Director of the Summer Institute of Biblical Studies (1969); and Wheaton College Graduate School Professor (1970-76). He was also a member of the Chicago Society of Biblical Research, Evangelical Theological Society, Linguistics Society of America, Wheaton College Scholastic Society, and Kappa Delta Pi (New York University). He was the author of many articles in scholarly journals and was a translator for the New International Version of the Bible. He was a life-long member of the C&MA and was one of the charter members of the Blanchard Road Alliance Church in Wheaton. He died on February 20, 1977 in Winfield, IL. He was survived by his wife, Laura, 5 children and 2 grandchildren.
