This archive contains notes, photographs, books, manuscripts, play programs, and other materials collected by Muriel St. Clare Byrne relating to Dorothy L. Sayers.

Some letters were removed from the archive and are now stored in the Dorothy L. Sayers Papers. See DLS Papers folders: 185a-187. Three books, listed at the end of the contents listing, have been removed and placed in the Wade book collection. The books, while remaining part of the archive, are now stored in the Wade Center book holdings, and may be retrieved by the archival staff upon request.

All original photographs have been removed and are now stored in the Sayers photo collection. They can be retrieved by the Wade archival staff upon request. Color scans of the originals have been stored in folder 10.

Illustrations and artwork appear in folders 4 and 7.

Biographical or Historical Information

Dorothy L. Sayers first met Muriel St. Clare Byrne while attending Somerville College at Oxford University, and the two became lifelong friends. Dorothy frequently shared unpublished work with Muriel for feedback and advice, and in 1935 they collaborated on a dramatization of the Lord Peter Wimsey story, Busman’s Honeymoon. The production opened on the London stage in December 1936, and was first published as a play version in 1937. The story was subsequently expanded into a novel by Sayers and published in 1939.
