Greville MacDonald Papers
Scope and Contents
The Greville MacDonald Papers archive is divided into four series: George MacDonald Centenary, Publisher Correspondence, General Correspondence, and Documents.
The George MacDonald Centenary series contains letters concerning the publication of Greville’s biography of his father, George MacDonald and his Wife in 1924, and the coinciding centenary celebration of George MacDonald’s birth. This series ranges from December 1922 to March 1925. Almost all of the letters are addressed to Greville MacDonald from various correspondents.
The Publisher Correspondence series contains letters written between Greville MacDonald and his publisher, Allen and Unwin, Ltd. This series extends from January 1923 through December 1924, and includes approximately sixty letters, most of which concern the publication of Greville MacDonald’s book, George MacDonald and His Wife, and various republishing matters for George MacDonald’s previously published works. Most of the letters are exchanged particularly between Greville MacDonald and Stanley Unwin.
The General Correspondence includes a variety of letters written by or addressed to Greville MacDonald, or concerning him to some extent. With the exception of a few typescript excerpts of letters addressed to his parents in 1848, all of the 31 letters fall between 1871 and 1936, with a large concentration of letters in 1934.
The Documents series contains various sets of notes either on lectures or on works of literature. Many of the notes have been reviewed and re-annotated in a different color of ink, or in pencil. Some subjects of the note collections are as follows:
- “Areopagitica” – notes on various philosophical or ethical topics including virtue, civil liberty, and the censorship of books (most likely relating to the speech by Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing to the Parliament of England)
- “Idealists whose idealism has proved practical!” – mentions Columbus, John Ruskin
- Collections of quotes from other authors, such as “Milton on Rash Marriage” There is no discernible date for the material in this section.
