Topics covered include: education at Gordon-Conwell Seminary with outstanding professors (Gordon Fee, Harold Ockenga, J. Christy Wilson) and courses, education at Harvard Divinity School specializing in Asian Studies with focus on Japanese history, culture, and economics, having a Japanese Zen priest and his wife board with the Birdsalls while Doug was in seminary, pivot of focus from pastoral ministry to missions, applying to LIFE Ministries, being accepted, and beginning fundraising, attending 5-week course at the Missionary Training Institute in Livonia, Mich., Sam Rowen as one of the course leaders, lessons learned in cultural attentiveness, experience of lowered power-differential in South Africa while preparing for the 2010 Cape Town Lausanne III Congress, and beginning language learning in Japan. Time period covered: 1976-2010.
