Scope and Contents

Audio tapes, DVDs, films, photographs, slides, videotapes, miscellaneous correspondence, calendars, clippings, articles, news releases and Kathryn Kuhlman memorabilia, chiefly from the 1950s to 1976.

Audio tapes are of Kuhlman's radio broadcasts, consisting of sermons, testimonies, musical selections and an oral history interview with Kuhlman; films record Kuhlman's early television programs; videotapes are predominatly her I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES television program, along with talk show segments on which she appeared, a documentary on her life, her Las Vegas healing service, her participation in the World Conference on the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem (1974), the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship World Conference (1975) and film coverage of her 1970 tour of Vietnam; photographs heavily emphasize Kuhlman's healing services, but also include photo scrapbooks from the earlier part of her life. Subjects covered include evangelistic work, numerous sermon topics on religious and social issues, spiritual healing, Pentecostalism, miracles, baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Jesus People, missions, and the evangelistic use of television. Persons featured in Kuhlman broadcasts include: associates Jimmie McDonald and Dino Kartsonakis, various evangelical figures like Corrie ten Boom and Hal Lindsey and numerous people healed through Kuhlman's ministry.  Collection includes correspondence related to the Kathryn Kuhlman Foundation Scholarship Fund at Wheaton College.

Biographical or Historical Information

Evangelistic organization; founded in 1957; based in Pittsburgh; functioned to coordinate Kuhlman's evangelistic/healing services and television and radio broadcasts; also funded mission projects around the world; continued coordinating broadcasts following Kuhlman's death, 1976-1982; continued ministry on reduced scale, 1982- Kathryn Johanna Kuhlman was born on May 9, 1907; internationally known as a healing evangelist; converted in 1921; first participated in revival meetings, 1923; first preaching opportunity, 1928; had evangelistic ministry primarily in Idaho, Colorado, Iowa, 1928-ca. 1940; re-established her ministry in Franklin, Pennsylvania, 1946; initiated healing ministry following effects from a series of sermons on the Holy Spirit, 1947; began preaching on radio and expanded her ministry to neighboring cities, 1948; relocated ministry to Pittsburgh, 1950; expanded schedule of regular services to include Los Angeles, 1965-1975; began regular television broadcast on CBS, 1965; ordained by the Evangelical Church Alliance, 1968; toured mission hospital and military bases in Vietnam, 1970; incorporated numerous cities in her service itinerary, 1970-1975; died on February 20, 1976.
