Biographical Information

Doris Embery was born in England around 1913, but grew up in China, the daughter of China Inland Mission workers Ethel Potter and William James Embery. After a few years spent on the China-Burmese border in the town of Tengyueh, the family traveled to other mission stations. William Embery was assigned to the main office in Shanghai as assistant treasurer (later treasurer) in or around 1916, where he and his wife remained for the rest of their period of service, until 1940, when they went to Australia. Doris went to CIM school in Chefoo at the age of six, where she stayed until her graduation in 1930. After a year as a tutor to the children of the Montgomery and Yates family, she went to Australia to live and to study accounting, after which she worked for Scripture Union for ten years. She eventually traveled to Great Britain in 1955, where she also worked for Scripture Union, among other organizations. In 1957, she became a missionary with the Overseas Missionary Fellowship, CIM's successor. She went to Hong Kong, where she worked until her retirement.
