Scope and Contents

Oral history interview with Joseph C. Jeter, who discusses his family and growing up, social and racial conditions in Philadelphia, education and employment, conversion and church involvement, first pastorate, limited missionary positions available to African Americans in White agencies, experience in Uganda and burden for missions, return to Uganda to survey mission stations staffed by African American missionaries, dire condition, and resulting burden to serve missionaries. Topics discussed cover the time period, 1931-1967. Also includes small selection of paper documents, primarily prayer letters from Have Christ Will Travel (1993-1996), and a pamphlet and brochure, program materials from a workshop and training programs.

Joseph C. Jeter was interviewed by Bob Shuster on June 6, 1996, at the Billy Graham Center Archives, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. The events described in the interview cover the time period 1931-1967.

Series 2: Paper Records (Box List)

A small selection of paper documents are included in the collection, consisting of:

Booklet Jeter wrote about Montrose Waite (folder 1-1). Prayer letters from Have Christ Will Travel or HCWT (folder 1-2) that span 1993-1996, including reports on the mission’s activities, lists of praise for answered prayers, and lists of prayer requests; some of the letters include attached reports or other documents, such as appeals for funds for a ministry van.

Handout from the Black Missionaries and Their Work workshop (folder 1-3), including lists of “Independent Faith Missions,” Denominational Missions,” “Mixed Missions,” and “Early Black Missionaries.” Also includes brochure for the Bethlehem School of the three-year Bible Missionary Training Institute run by HCWT, including doctrinal statement and outline of the curriculum; brochure for HCWT’s short-term missions program.

HCWT brochure (folder 1-4) that answers the questions, “What is It?” “Who Founded It?” What is It’s Work?” and outlines the organization’s doctrinal statement; also includes photos of Joseph C. and Catherine E. Jeter. HCWT pamphlet touching on “Missions—What is It?” and “You! Go! You Preach the Gospel.”
