 Collection
Identifier: CN 295

Scope and Contents

Newspaper clippings, questionnaires, audio tapes, sermon transcripts, and other documents gathered by Dr. Ivan Fahs during a research project into twentieth century evangelistic meetings held in Charlotte, NC, by J. Wilbur Chapman, Billy Sunday, Mordecai Ham, Billy Graham, and Leighton Ford, spanning 1915-1983. The materials contained in this collection consist of the data Fahs gathered plus notes and aids, such as lists of events, which he and his students made up. Materials include copies of newspaper clippings, returned questionnaires, correspondence with attendees of meetings, typescripts of sermons, a theses on Mordecai Ham, audio tapes, and a photograph. Most of the data in the collection is self-explanatory. Of particular interest are the returned questionnaires in folders 1-17 and 2-14 about the 1923-1924 Billy Sunday meetings and the 1934 Mordecai Ham meetings. They contain the impressions of the meetings in the memories of many people who attended.
