Harper and Row / HarperCollins, 1990
Scope and Contents
This series consists primarily of business letters to Frederick Buechner over the period of 1943-2007. They are organized by year and date, then by alphabetical order with 40 inches of content. Although most letters were written to Buechner, some were written by him, and others were written by Buechner’s correspondents concerning him or his manuscripts. Aside from letters, this series also contains items ranging from contracts and royalty statements to book jackets and excerpts from manuscripts. The correspondents consist primarily of publishers, such as Atheneum and Harper & Row, and editors like Harry Ford. However, Buechner also exchanged letters with colleges, churches, and other organizations and people.
Although the content of the letters of this series exchanged between Buechner and his correspondents are all concerned with business, the more specific details of each letter varies. The letters by his editors, not surprisingly, are often concerned with manuscript descriptions, comments on manuscripts, advice on publishing, and discussions of reviews and sales of his works.
The reader will notice that letters concerning possible changes in his works decrease as Buechner matures and gains a more solid mastery over his personal style. As these letters decrease, Buechner receives an increasing amount of requests from many institutions or individuals for various reasons, such as interviews or permission to use excerpts from his manuscripts. This series also contains invitations to meet or write for colleges, churches, and newsletters. Not only do the letters of these series provide information on the details of the publishing Buechner’s work, they also demonstrate his development as a writer and as a person.

Access to published books, essays and articles; newspaper and magazine clippings; published reviews and similar documents (the “Public Materials”) are guided by the general access policies of the Wheaton College Archives & Special Collections (i.e., those policies generally used by Wheaton in similar situations, which policies govern any copying, reproduction or duplication of any Public Materials for personal use only). Buechner or FBLA, then Wheaton shall be free to use and share such Recordings pursuant only to the requirements of the copyright holder. If the Recordings are not subject to such a written release executed by Rev. Buechner or FBLA, then such Recordings are subject to the terms of this paragraph.)
A subset of Private Materials (the “Special Private Materials”), such as Rev. Buechner’s copy of Gone with the Wind and other papers, so designated, are unavailable until seventy-five years after the death of Rev. Buechner and that time will retain the restrictions for those items classified "private materials."
A fourth category are those materials received from Princeton University. These retain the originally agreed upon restriction (manuscripts closed during Buechner’s lifetime with access available upon written permission from Buechner. The Held correspondence is closed until 25 years after Buechner’s death).
Researchers desiring access to those portions of the collection classified as Private Materials or Special Private Materials must obtain written permission from FBLA.
Rights of publication must be secured from FBLA, which entity holds the copyright to Buechner’s unpublished archival material, or from the author or author’s agent in the case of secondary works.
