Kenneth had written several articles for Asia magazine, of which Elsie Weil was the editor. He was invited to a dinner at the Mayflower hotel on February 12, 1942, "Announcement Dinner, the East and West Association." Pearl Buck was setting up this association. Kenneth was invited because he had been writing articles for Asia. McNutt and Buck were up at the head of the T-shaped table, and Kenneth found himself sort of at the center, sitting next to Elsie Weil and across from Dick Walsh. He began telling stories from the book that Margaret had written, and the editor of Asia magazine became interested in publishing these stories, so Kenneth told him that they were already written and in need of a publisher.
