Virginia W. Gasper Papers
Scope and Contents
The papers of Virginia Warren Gasper chronicle the religious and domestic journey of an American woman whose life spanned nearly a century. A prolific letter writer, Virginia was an only child and wrote regularly to her parents and relatives. She began prayer journaling in 1963 and included cards and letters she had received, as well as clippings from newspapers and magazines that reflected her opinions. She wrote to newspaper editors, politicians, and preachers. The collection contains her writings, both published and unpublished. It includes secondary materials and correspondence from family members, friends, politicians, and preachers.
The collection is organized into 6 series (Biography, Correspondence, Diaries, Writings, Newsletters, Clippings). The Biography series includes materials that chronicle Virginia Gasper's life events, such as her graduations, sorority, engagement, marriage, purchase of a house, Myers-Briggs personality survey, and certificates. This series also includes photos, calendars, brochures, Bible verses, publications featuring Virginia, and medical information. The Correspondence series includes letters and copies of letters written by Virginia throughout her life to her parents, relatives, children, and friends. It also includes greeting cards and letters that she and her husband received from friends, family, and famous individuals, such as Nancy Reagan and several presidents. Some letters are written by third parties to Virginia's mother. The Diaries series is the most extensive and is comprised of over fifty notebooks and collections of loose pages that represent Virginia's entries addressed to God. She writes of her spiritual journey and her daily activities and challenges. The Writings series contains Virginia's published and unpublished works. They include short stories and letters to newspaper editors. There is an extensive collection of Prayer Weeklies that she wrote and distributed. The Newsletters series includes a newsletter from her college sorority, one from her husband's military unit, and various religious organizations. The Clippings series contains clippings from her college's newspaper, local newspapers where she lived, and examples of prayer journals. These items, like the clippings inserted in her diary entries, reflect Virginia's opinions and interests.
