Sahali Adams Hemocytometer Kit. From Wikipedia. Dr. Ammann used this kit throughout his medical school training and into his internship. Working at county hospitals many laboratory studies were not performed for financial reasons. Medical students and interns often performed their own determinations on patients of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and white blood cell counts using these kits. In 1960-1962 it was not considered a burden but rather a privilege to be assisting the patients in diagnosis and treatment. From Wikipedia "The hemocytometer was invented by Louis-Charles Malassez and consists of a thick glass microscope slide with a rectangular indentation that creates a chamber. This chamber is engraved with a laser-etched grid of perpendicular lines. The device is carefully crafted so that the area bounded by the lines is known, and the depth of the chamber is also known. It is therefore possible to count the number of cells or particles in a specific volume of fluid, and thereby calculate the concentration of cells in the fluid overall." History of Pediatric AIDS
