Scope and Contents

Papers, recordings of meeting sessions, planning materials and other documents from the Trinary Consultation, which examined how Christians in the late twentieth century should present the Christian gospel in large urban settings. The meeting was co-sponsored by Moody Bible Institute, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Wheaton College.

Conference background: The Trinary Committee had been formed by Moody Bible Institute (MBI), Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS), and the Wheaton College Graduate School (WCGS) to plan projects in which the three Chicago-area institutions could cooperate. The 1986 consultation was to be the first of these. Planning began in 1984.

Conference purpose: Study of the implications of the growth around the world of cities of four million people or more and the most effective means of Christian witness in these urban settings

Attendance figures: 136 registrants, 50 program participants, 79 students for a total of 265. Of these, 79 were from one of three sponsoring institutions.

Financial support Mission leaders, people in urban ministries, pastors, professors and students were invited to attend. All except the students were charged a registration fee. The three institutional sponsors also probably gave support by providing funds and/or staff

Post-conference resources There had been discussion of publishing a book of papers from the conference, to be edited by Melvin E. Lorentzen, but this was apparently not done.

Accruals and Additions

The materials in this collection were given to the Archives of the Billy Graham Center 1986 and 1997 by James Kraakevik and by Melvin Lorentzen, who helped plan the meeting. Dr. Kraakevik was director and Dr. Lorentzen was associate director of the Billy Graham Center.
